Informal Resume of
Vickey Kalambakal
I write for both academic and commercial publications.  Recent projects include
•        85 articles on pop culture for an upcoming series from Publications International titled F.Y.I.
•        five chapters on military history for The Gale Encyclopedia of World History: War,
•        interviews with scouts and former scouts for Boys’ Life Magazine.

I have contributed articles to several academic websites and books, such as
Day by Day: The
Thirties, published by Facts on File Books, and this year’s 8-volume African American National
Biography from Oxford Press. Other projects featuring my work are The World of Frederick
Douglass (also from Oxford Press), Encyclopedia of World Geography, Native Americans in Sports,
and
Postwar America: An Encyclopedia of Social, Political, Cultural, and Economic History.  

I also blog.
History Los Angeles and A Lot of Gaul are two of my endeavors, the first showcasing my
love of local history and the second a more eclectic mix of musings on writing, archaeology, and
pop culture.

My non-academic articles have been published in several magazines, including
Arizona Highways,
American Profile, Ancient History, Variety, and Erickson Tribune.  I have also contributed to over a
dozen volumes of the prestigious
Uncle John's Bathroom Reader, as well as writing how-to articles
for Mahalo.com.

Education:  In May 2003 I graduated from Arizona State University, earning a Masters Degree in
American History with a focus on the history of the American West.  My thesis was titled “Minstrel
Shows and the California Gold Rush.”  Academic awards include first place in the Lincoln Forum
Essay Contest, 1999, the Feldt-Barbinol Prize in women’s history, 2002, and first place in the
Lawrence G. Blackmon Contest for Student Book Collections, 2003.  I received my BA in History
from UCLA.  
Employment:  Currently, I am a full time
freelance writer.  While at Arizona State
University, I was a Teaching Assistant for the
History Department.  Previously, I was employed
at The Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo,
CA, for twelve years, the last three as a part time
web designer.  

Personal:  I am single and in excellent health.
The South Bay area of Los Angeles County is my
home. I  have one child, a 31-year-old daughter,
who is married and has three little boys.
